10/9 Moth total on Tuesday morning again low but brightened up by a nice Sallow and a drabber Pale Mottled Willow , both new for the garden, as well as the 1st autumn Snout [that’s autumn not Autumnal!}.

Went to Hornsea Mere with Roy this morning. Good numbers of hirundines over the mere in the cold wet weather. Roy counted 63 Little Gulls and I found an adult winter Mediterranean Gull but no sign of Black Tern or Red and Black-necked Grebes. Whilst checking Kirkholme Point felt cold for the first in many weeks.

Independently Mark Robinson re-found the Great White Egret and had 4 Greenshank and a Yellow Wagtail on Kirkholme Point.

Did a sea-watch off Ulrome early afternoon. Murk limited viewing and apart from good counts of Gannet and Fulmar only had an Arctic Skua and a few Kittiwake, Common Scoter and Teal.

Moved to Tophill Low NR. Again good numbers of hirundine and as at Hornsea Mere a noticeable influx of Wigeon and Gadwall. Otherwise little else with no waders today although yesterday Green Sandpiper and Snipe on Watton NR. The best bird was a Grey Wagtail by O reservoir.

Brian Spence had several sightings of Kingfisher on North Marsh.

Great White Egret at Hornsea Mere {again!!]

8/9 Were already on the way to Hornsea Mere with Martin L and Roy when Mark Robinson rang to say he had a Great White Egret. Admittedly this our second locally this year, Martin even having had one already at the Mere. I’d also seen them in the USA this year. John and Mike Jackson were already in the hide so headed for the south side. No initial sign from 1st field but Roy counted 53 Little Gulls.

The Great White Egret flew from near the hide and I picked it up, sticking out like a sore thumb, in the top of a tree near the “cormorant trees”. Headed for the edge of 2nd fields for a closer look but all the Cormorants got up and it was no surprise that the egret had flown too. Relocated again by Roy nearby. Whilst scanning the north shore Martin pick up the juvenile Red-necked Grebe 1st seen on Friday afternoon.

The egret flew east and we lost it behind Swan Island. Went round to Kirkholme Point to join John and Mike. Had the remaining juvenile Black Tern then the egret was picked up in flight, by another birder, before alighting on Swan Island where it rested for a few minutes below being flushed again, this time by “pleasure cruise” motor boat.

Went to the hide for lunch where I re-found Red-necked Grebe close off 2nd field but drifting west.

I was dropped at Hornsea NCBC to walk the cliff-top to Atwick. Bird-wise only a Reed Bunting, 2 Pied Wagtails and a 25+ Linnet but had a good few Small Tortoiseshells.

However my walk cost me a Pomarine Skua, although it had been very distant.

Next headed for Barmston but with an adult Kittiwake at Tophill Low NR, a site tick for Martin, a change of plan was made. No further sign of the Kittiwake but had an adult Mediterranean Gull on D reservoir and in Decoy Field. Up 5 were seen in total this afternoon. Did the full circuit of D reservoir, dropping in to see the recently arrived Belted Galloways grazing Hempholme Meadow.

Also had a look on North Marsh but missed the Kingfisher this time.

John stayed in car park hide and managed 2 Hobbies but failed with the Mediterranean Gulls.

My attempt at a Cottingham moth blog has failed this year. Will give it a go again next year but for now will go back to highlights on here. Saturday night was the first cold night since late spring and resulted in only 20 of 6 species although 2 others avoided the trap. However include Brown-spot Pinion, a 1st for me.

August 27-Tophill Low NR

Did Tophill Low NR on Tuesday afternoon. Started in car park hide. Had the juvenile Black-necked Grebe and an adult Common Tern but no sign of the 15 Little Gulls present in the morning.

Walked up to Hempholme Meadow. The grass had just been cut. Green Sandpiper on the nearest pool with the regular Grey Heron.

Walked back through D wood. Mixed tit flock near North Marsh including a few Goldcrest but nothing of note from the hide in a brief viewing. Had a looked from middle hide and had better views of the Black-nacked Grebe. Checked the small brick building there and the car park and found the expected Red Underwing.

Headed south to check around O reservoir in the hope of Clouded Yellows having missed them on the 16th and 20th. Managed up to 4 but like Monday at Brough they were so mobile even Usain Bolt couldn’t keep up with them.

Also still plenty of Painted Ladies and Silver Y’s.

Checked South Marsh West from  L-shaped hide. Richard has been dropping the levels, partly to put water in the drained South Marsh East. Plenty of mud showing including a good “crake edge” under the river bank reeds. Two Greenshank and 3 Dunlin present. Went to Watton NR. Viewing difficult in the low evening sun and no sign of the Ruff but could have been hidden among the Lapwings.

Went back to South Marsh West and two juvenile Curlew Sandpipers and a Little Ringed Plover had joined the Dunlin. Also a Common Sandpiper viewable from back-to-back hide.

The two juvenile Black Terns and juvenile Black -necked Grebe were still at Hornsea Mere, again joined by a third Black Tern  and 400+ Little Gulls in the evening.

5/6 Had a good walk round the Drewton Estate on Wednesday afternoon. The plan had been to look for butterflies and moths but the low cloud that plagued the east coast recently hadn’t burnt off so ended up seeing, apart from the ever present Nettle-taps, one moth but this was a new one for me, a Cork Moth. A really nice looking micro.

6/6 Went to look for Dragonflies at Fountain Farm, Watton with Roy and Martin L on Thursday afternoon. Only managed 6 Azure Damselflies but a few other interesting insects.

With the Great White Egret reported again this afternoon at Tophill Low NR went to get a site tick for Martin after adding it to his Yorkshire List on Tuesday.

Had been seen recently at Struncheon Hill Pond but no sign of it there late afternoon. Split up and Roy and Martin checked the ditches around Hempholme Meadow whilst I checked the area west of Barmston Drain. Shortly got a call from Martin that Roy had seen it dropped onto Hempholme Meadow. We then viewed it from Barmston Drain bank for a few minute before it took off and flew strongly east.

Ring-necked Duck had been reported again for the last two days but no sign for us early evening or other regulars earlier.

7/6 The Great White Egret was again at the north end of Tophill Low NR on Friday. Went to High Eske late afternoon. The Oystercatcher still had one very large chick but the Common Terns had abandoned their nest but were still present so could sit again.

Had a few Lapwing chicks on Leven Carrs. Good numbers of odonata along Leven Canal earlier but too cold later but I had a few damselflies behind High Eske pit. 3 Ringed Plover were on the temporary Islands when I returned to the NR.

8/6 Went to Swinemoor with Roy and Martin L on Saturday afternoon. I picked out the now tatty drake Garganey. Also 2 Ringed Plover and 4 Little Ringed Plover. Had a look at Bewholme Hall then check the sea between Atwick and Barmston. Had a few Puffin, a Manx Shearwater off Ulrome and a female Eider off Barmston.

9/6 Went to Tophill Low NR with Roy on Sunday morning. Jeff Barker had the Great White Egret on Hempholme Meadow early morning but no further sign although we had it’s smaller cousin flying north from North Marsh, causing some confusion at Hempholme Meadow. We went to Kiplingcotes with John this afternoon. Hoped for the recently seen Turtle Doves but missed out along with several others. Although not exactly warm it was brighter than at Tophill Low NR and we managed a good list of insects. In some way the less perfect weather can help with butterflies and moths as although harder to find are less mobile when located which helped with Dingy Skipper which can be difficult to photograph.

10/6 Monday afternoon checked out a site at North Newbald. Looked good for Banded Demoiselle but too cold today. Had my first orchids of the year.

Insects taking over?

28/5 Went to High Eske last Tuesday. As expected at this time of year it was pretty quiet but good to see the Oystercatchers with 2 robust chicks and a pair of Common Terns were nesting on the main island. A Little Ringed Plover was still hanging around although no sign of any breeding activity. Didn’t do Swinemoor as Roy and Martin L had already been where they had 3 Tundra Ringed Plover, 2 Little Ringed Plover and 4 Redshank. At Bewholme Hall they had 2 Little Ringed Plover. 30/5 On Thursday had a good walk round the Drewton Estate. Best thing was a Red Kite low over Keeper’s Lodge although didn’t hang around long enough for me to get the camera out. Also at least 4 Common Buzzards although the small stuff wasn’t too apparent.

31/5 Went to Paull with Roy and Martin L on Friday morning. Unfortunalely missed the tide but had c45 Ringed Plover and a Dunlin on Paull Sands.

Also 2 Little Egrets in flight over the Strays. Went round to the Strays car park. Surprised to see a Whooper Swan in the fence off area [John Ward had 3 fly from Sunk Island to Paull late Monday evening].

Late afternoon had a walk in Cottingham to Oppy Wood. Little of significance bird wise although good to hear several Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. Also a Sedge Warbler singing in a ditch off Dunswell Road. However with the temperture well up I had plenty of insects including micro moths. Helophilus pendulus-Cottingham.

1/6 Back at High Eske NR on Saturday afternoon. Good to see the Common Tern still sitting and a least one Oystercatcher chick. The resident female Goldeneye still had an escort.

  2/6 Went to Paull with Roy on Sunday morning. Started at Saltend. Tide still well out so very few waders but had a Peregrine over. The Whooper Swan was still on the Strays and on Paull Sands were 2 Little Egrets, Bar-tailed Godwit and Avocet as well as good numbers of Curlew and Shelduck. Went to Swinemoor to see a drake Garganey reported to me by Richard Jennings then on to Bewholme Hall where we had 2 Ringed Plover and an Oystercatcher.

Finished the day with a sea-watch off Atwick. Highlight was a Great Skua. Also 8 Sandwich Terns, 8 Fulmar, numerous Kittiwake and 5 Common Scoter drifting north close inshore.

3/6 Went to Tophill Low NR on Monday afternoon.

Had 2 of 3 Little Egrets lingering on Watton NR.

Also a pair of Common Terns lingering but no sign yet of nesting. One Little Ringed Plover there with 3 on South Marsh East but again no sign of nesting. A few Marsh Harriers still around the site. The best thing was my [and likely the sites] first Wall Brown for the year, at East Pond.

Getting in found a male Golden Oriole had been present on in Burton Bushes on Beverley Westwood for 2 days. Found by Ivan Nethercote and confirmed by Geoff Dobbs this evening. Unfortunately it stopped singing as soon as the news got out. Spend an hour forlornly listening with Roy, Stuart Griffiths and Lee Johnson, joined by Stuart Noble and Steve Webb as we were giving up. Again saw no Spotted Flycatchers but at least one pair of Great Spotted Woodpecker and a pair of Mistle Thrush in the area.

4/6 Burton Bushes checked with out luck by at least Roy and Richard Willison early Wednesday morning. A Great White Egret spent the morning at Hornsea Mere in a tree viewable from Kirkholme Point. Stayed long enough for Roy and Martin L but flew toward the west end early afternoon. As I’ve seen 2 there already I wasn’t tempted to go looking for it. Richard Jennings had the drake Garganey on Swinemoor again this evening.

11/5 Only managed an hour at nearby Woodland Trust site Nut Wood and Wauldby Sprogs on Saturday evening. I’ve visited this area since I was a child and it was one of my first birding sites. The main interest is a few breeding Marsh Tits but also over the years have seen other interesting birds including Green Woodpecker, Brambling  and Hobby. However it can be hard work and today was no exception.

12/5 Did Swinemoor from Weel Road with John on Sunday morning. Only found 3 Wood Sandpipers and no Little Ringed Plovers.

Went to Tophill Low NR. The Ring-necked Duck was still on D reservoir, initially a the north end but close from the car park hide later.

I picked up a first winter Mediterranean Gull with a few Common and Black-headed Gulls. Also 2 Common Terns.

Walked south this afternoon. Had 2 Marsh Harrier and the 2 Little Ringed Plovers were still on the nearly dry South Marsh East. Retreated to the car park hide mid afternoon as the weather deteriorated. Nothing new and with the rain not yet set in I headed north. Met up with Martin H and I joined him looking for Large Red Damselfly exuviae.

Had c50, all new from yesterday and I had my first Large Red for the year.

Rain set in and we retreated to the car park hide but nothing new so didn’t stay much longer.

6/5 Did Hornsea Mere from the hide on Monday morning with Martin L, Roy and John. Highlights were a Black-tailed Godwit flying west and a Cuckoo.

John had 2 Avocets at Bewholme Hall.

Went to Tophill Low NR this afternoon. Ring-necked Duck still on D reservoir.

Went to catch the tide at Paull Holme Strays late afternoon. Had 10 Whimbrel, 14 Shelduck, 400 Dunlin, 49 Ringed Plover [mostly tundra], 4 Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, 10 Avocet, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit and Greenshank.

7/5 My first Swifts over Cottingham on Tuesday morning,

Did Swinemoor from Weel Road. Quickly picked up 3 Wood Sandpiper [4 later]. Also 3 Little Ringed Plover and 4 Redshank but most of the wildfowl had moved on.

Went on to High Eske. The resident female Goldeneye was still holding onto a male. Walked north. No waders on Leven Carrs scrape or raptors over but heard a Cuckoo. Returning to the NR had my first Orange-tips. Little Ringed Plover and Wood Sandpiper on the “scrape” but flushed by a Fox.

A Common Tern flew in.

Went to look for migrants in Cottingham early evening. Common Whitethroat in fields off Dunswell Road and Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcaps in Oppy Wood. The highlight though was a very approachable Water Vole in a rubbish filled drain at the latter site.

10/5 Went to Swinemoor with Roy and Martin L on Friday afternoon. Had the 6 Wood Sandpiper reported yesterday [9 reported by Nathan Pickering later]. Also 7 Redshank and 3 Little Ringed Plover.

Went to Tophill Low NR. Had time to day tick the Ring-necked Duck on D reservoir as well as 800+ Swift over before heading to High Eske to collect the 2 tern rafts. Have mixed feelings about this. Managed to get them on High Eske NR 2 years ago when a pair each of Common Tern and Black-headed Gull breed. However they broke free in the winter and we didn’t manage to put them out again last year, probably a good thing as the high water levels during the summer would have been a problem. This year with South Marsh East drained and the logistics of using them again at High Eske NR beyond us they will be put on Watton NR [hopefully very soon!] to  with luck attract any displaced terns.

A slow week

30/4 Went to High Eske NR on Tuesday afternoon. Still 2 White Wagtails and few a Yellow Wagtails as well as a Common Sandpiper and Pink-footed Goose.

1/5 Only managed a walk in Cottingham on Wednesday evening. Did KGV rec and fields behind as far as Creyke Beck substation. Very few migrants with one Blackcap and a silent Chiffchaff but had a Green Woodpecker calling behind Millhouse Woods Lane pumping station.

2/5 Went to Tophill Low NR on Thursday afternoon. The Ring-necked Duck was still on D reservoir but distant. Walked north along the road. Good number of Yellow Wagtails in Decoy Fields but distant and hidden in the emerging crop. Little Egret again on Hempholme Meadows.

3/5 Went to Welton Waters on Friday afternoon. Very quiet with few warblers but had my first Garden Warbler by the WAC building, not a regular bird here.

4/5 Back to High Eske NR on Saturday afternoon. The resident female Goldeneye was still hanging onto a male. Walked to Leven Canal. Female Marsh Harrier again hunting the carrs and a Black-tailed Godwit on the scrape.

5/5 Streamer moth in the trapped on Sunday morning was a first for the garden. Check here for my new moth blog.

Went to Tophill Low NR with John. The Ring-necked Duck was still on D reservoir and I found a female Scaup. Also at least 2 female Marsh Harriers seen. Did the north end this morning but nothing of note but did have my first Green-veined White butterfly and heard a Cuckoo. Walked the south end this afternoon. A pair of Little Ringed Plover still showing interest in South Marsh East, although whether they can withstand the disturbance of the management work over the next few weeks we’ll have to see. Cetti’s Warbler still singing by South Marsh West but again mid way between the hides.

28/4 Went to Tophill Low NR with John on Sunday morning. Started in D reservoir car park hide. Good number of hirundines as well as a small number of Common Swifts. Also a female Marsh Harrier flew south. Seen again later and then 2 seen early evening. Walked up through D woods to Hempholme Meadows. Little Egret there but flew to the river after being flushed to 2 volunteer wardens.

Several tens of Swift over the north end. Walked back along the road.

Had no wagtails but a few on the reservoir wall below car park hide, a brief “channel-type”, 2 more showy Whites and 4 Yellows and a Pied.

Had lunch in the hide and picked up a Common Tern [a 2nd or 2 more seen after we went south]. Went south this afternoon, first to South Marsh East where a Greenshank was showing.

Then went to South Marsh West where the Cetti’s Warbler was in good song but only giving brief views, and Reed Warbler just audible in the wind. Also heard a Cetti’s briefly by North Lagoon. On Watton NR a pair of Little Ringed Plover had been seen copulating. Lesser Whitethroat singing in South Scrub, Ended the day back at car park hide where the Ring-necked Duck was showing up close having dropped in mid afternoon.

Getting cold again!

24/4 Went to Tophill Low NR on Wednesday afternoon. The intention was to check out the Blue-headed Wagtails seen over the weekend so after confirming the Ring-necked Duck was still on D reservoir [before departing to Hornsea Mere for a short break] headed north up the straight road but only had a single Yellow Wagtail.

After checking Hempholme Meadows walked back through D woods. Had a Lesser Redpoll at the north end. Then headed straight for Watton NR before the light got too flaring. Had a Little Ringed Plover, probably the 1st sighting for a while. Then did South Marsh West. The Cetti’s Warbler was again singing close to “back to back’ hide. Even saw in a bush close to the hide but repeatedly failed to locate it in the view finder, did the same on Saturday. On the now almost drain South East I found 2 White Wagtails as well as 2 Redshank. In fact so dry now there was a excavator out on it!

27/4 Had the trap out over night on Friday. Only a Early Grey.

Went to Hornsea Mere with Roy on Saturday afternoon. Had the pair of Red-crested Pochard and mixed pair again from the hide.

Roy picked up the pair of Black-necked Grebes, 1st reported a week ago, but close to the south side. Also despite numbers down eslewhere we had 88 Goldeneye.  Also Common Sandpiper on Swan Island. However no sign of the Ring-necked Duck seen again yesterday, Round at Kirkholme Point there was a very mobile flock of wagtails including a Channel-type. Also a male Wheatear

Went to Atwick to do a sea watch but couldn’t get out of the wind so moved to Ulrome where we got a shelter between the caravans. Got my 1st Sandwich Tern as well as a few Kittiwake, Gannet and Red-throated Divers and Guillemot.

Checked Bewholme Hall where had a Little Ringed Plover and pair of Oystercatcher.

Finished at Swinemoor. Still plenty of duck but only waders were 2 Little Ringed Plovers and 2 Redshank. For more recently from here check here and here.
